Experience with the Introduction of Microprocessor Systems Into Industry
註釋A description is given of the development and introduction into a metallurgical plant of two microprocessor-based control systems that were designed on the basis of experience and information gained during post-graduate research work at the University of Cape Town. The systems comprise a batch-weighing system for the supply of raw materials to a submerged-arc furnace and a system to control the electrodes in that furnace. Details are given of the problems that were encountered, which include the malfunctioning of hardware and the difficulty of debugging programmes in electrically programmable read-only memory (EPROM). The work described demonstrates how the universities can provide a service to industrial organizations that sponsor studies towards the attachment of higher degrees.
