Better Data for Better Decisions
註釋Though the effective planning and management of health services depends on comprehensive health information, Australia remains behind most other advanced countries in the health information it regularly collects and uses. This paper calls for the Australian Health Survey to be conducted again in 2021 and thereafter every six years. That national survey was last undertaken in 2011-2012 and provided a baseline of the most comprehensive health surveillance data ever collected and reported in Australia. The value of that high-quality national data to services, policy makers, researchers, and funders was, and continues to be, profound, but there is currently no commitment to repeat that work. In support, this paper summarises the impact of chronic diseases in Australia and the limitations of current health data to help reduce and prevent this impact, and discusses the urgent and future need for a comprehensive approach to population health surveillance that includes biomedical data.
