Prospects of Micro-tapping Immature Rubber
註釋The long period of immaturity is a deterrent especially for smallholders to replant their current poor yielding stands with high yielding cultivars. Beside, some smallholders resort to premature conventional tapping which seriously affects girth, bark renewal and yield. Thus the need for earlier opening is of considerable importance being one of the ways to reduce the immaturity period. Ibe recent method which has potential is to tap trees at smaller girth than that currently recommended by micro-tapping. With this in mind, micro-tapping experiments were set up on RRIM 600, GT 1 and RRIM 703. The approach adopted was to tap trees of 36 cm girth and more with punctures on vertical stimulated grooves. Yields of 1000 kg per hectare were obtained over 18 months' tapping, Girth increment over similar period averaged 9 cm in comparison to 12 cm for untapped control trees.
