Great Works of Biblical Art
註釋The Bible has inspired many generations of artists to produce masterpieces. As well as responding to the message of "the book" they have been moved and excited by it host of wonderful stories, and by a great gallery of characters including Abraham ad Isaac, King David, the Queen of Sheba, Salome, John the Baptist and St Peter. All of these are featured in the superb plates in this book, which are arranged in biblical order, from the Creation to the stoning of St Stephen. The greatest masters are liberally represented by works such a Michelangelo's Deluge, Rubens' Samson and Delilah and Rembrandt's Prodigal Son, while the New Testament paintings reach a climax of terror and glory in Mathias Grünewald's Crucifixion and Resurrection. -- Back cover.
