註釋This study explores women's experiences of navigating the legal system to obtain protection from domestic violence in New South Wales. Interviews were conducted with 40 women about their experiences in obtaining an Apprehended Violence Order (AVO), factors in the decision to use the legal system, going to court, facing the perpetrator in court, obtaining legal assistance and information, obtaining non-legal support and advocacy, and breaches of AVOs. The majority (32) of participants were seeking an AVO against an ex-partner; 14 of the participants were Aboriginal, 5 were from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and two were lesbians. The findings highlight the importance of the initial response by police, access to accurate and timely information, and support and advocacy.
