그림 형제가 수집한 아이들과 가정의 민화(Children's and Household Tales, Grimm's Fairy Tales)(1812) : 그림 형제 동화집(Grimms' Fairy Tales by Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm Grimm)의 원제는 독일어로 Kinder- und Hausmärchen, Grimms Elfenmärchen, 즉 그림 형제가 수집한 아이들과 가정의 민화(Children's and Household Tales, Grimm's Fairy Tales)입니다. 1812년 최초로 86편을 모아 초판을 발행하였으며, 이후 이야기를 추가하며 증보판을 발행하였습니다. 1857년 출간한 일곱 번째 증보판은 211편의 이야기를 포괄하고 있으며, 한국인에게도 친숙한 백설공주, 잠자는 숲 속의 미녀, 라푼젤, 신데렐라, 헨젤과 그레텔, 늑대와 일곱 마리 아기 염소, 개구리 왕자, 브레멘 음악대 등 수많은 유럽동화를 포괄하고 있습니다. 동화책 자체도 워낙 유명하지만, 몇몇 작품은 디즈니 애니메이션으로 전 세계적으로 흥행하였습니다. 단 애니메이션의 줄거리는 원작과 큰 차이가 있습니다.

그림 형제 이전에도 독일 민담을 최초로 수집한 요한 카를 아우구스트 무샤우스(Johann Karl August Musäus)의 Nachgelassene Schriften(1791), 아힘 폰 아르님(Achim von Arnim)과 클레멘스 브렌타노(Clemens Brentano)의 민요모음집 소년의 마적(Des Knaben Wunderhorn)(1805) 등이 출간된바 있습니다만, 언어학자인 그림 형제가 평생에 걸쳐 채록하였을 뿐 아니라 수차례의 증보판을 통해 끊임없이 가다듬은 ‘현존하는 최고의 유럽동화집’은 단연 그림 형제의 공로라 할 수 있습니다. 그림 형제 또한 동화를 본격적으로 집필한 프랑스 작가 샤를 페로(Charles Perrault)의 대표작 - 빨간 두건, 잠자는 숲 속의 공주, 장화 신은 고양이, 신데렐라, 푸른 수염, 엄지 동자, 다이아몬드와 두꺼비들, 당나귀 가죽, 어리석은 세가지 소원 등의 일부를 각색해, 자신의 동화집에 싣는 등 그의 영향을 크게 받았습니다. 그림형제의 동화집 출간 이후 그의 작업에 영감을 받아, 세계 각지에서 자국의 이야기를 수집한 책이 잇달아 출간되었습니다. 테마여행신문 TTN Korea 영어고전(English Classics)과 함께 어제도, 오늘도, 내일도 멋진 문학여행을! IT was the middle of winter, and the snowflakes were falling from the sky like feathers. Now, a Queen sat sewing at a window framed in black ebony, and as she sewed she looked out upon the snow. Suddenly she pricked her finger and three drops of blood fell on to the snow. And the red looked so lovely on the white that she thought to herself: ‘If only I had a child as white as snow and as red as blood, and as black as the wood of the window frame!’ Soon after, she had a daughter, whose hair was black as ebony, while her cheeks were red as blood, and her skin as white as snow; so she was called Snowdrop. But when the child was born the Queen died. A year after the King took another wife. She was a handsome woman, but proud and overbearing, and could not endure that any one should surpass her in beauty. She had a magic looking-glass, and when she stood before it and looked at herself she used to say: Snowdrop.

한겨울이었고, 눈송이는 깃털처럼 하늘에서 떨어지고 있었습니다. 이제, 한 여왕이 검은 흑단 액자로 된 창문에 앉아 바느질을 하고 있었고, 그녀는 바느질을 하면서 눈 위를 내다봤습니다. 갑자기 그녀가 손가락을 찌르자 세 방울의 피가 눈 위에 떨어졌습니다. 그리고 하얀색 상의 빨간색은 너무 사랑스러워 보였고, 그녀는 혼자 생각했다. "만약 나에게 눈처럼 하얗고 피처럼 빨갛고 창틀의 나무처럼 검은 아이가 있다면!" 얼마 지나지 않아 딸 하나를 낳았는데, 머리는 흑단같이 검고, 뺨은 피처럼 빨갛고, 피부는 눈처럼 하얗다고 하여 눈방울이라고 불렀습니다. 하지만 아이가 태어났을 때 여왕은 죽었습니다. 왕이 다른 아내를 데려간 지 1년 후에요 그녀는 잘생긴 여성이었지만, 자랑스럽고 고압적이었고, 누구도 그녀를 능가해야 한다는 것을 견딜 수 없었습니다. 그녀는 마법의 유리를 가지고 있었고, 그 유리 앞에 서서 자신을 바라볼 때 이렇게 말하곤 했습니다: 스노우 드롭(Snowdrop).

THERE was once a poor man who had four sons, and when they were grown up, he said to them: ‘Dear children, you must go out into the world now, for I have nothing to give you. You must each learn a trade and make your own way in the world.’ So the four Brothers took their sticks in their hands, bid their father good-bye, and passed out of the town gate. When they had walked some distance, they came to four cross roads, which led into four different districts. Then the eldest one said: ‘We must part here, but this day four years, we will meet here again, having in the meantime done our best to make our fortunes.’ The Four Clever Brothers.

She ran to the window to see if her Master was coming with the guest, but she saw nobody. Then she went back to the fowls again, and thought, ‘One wing is catching a little, better to eat it—and eat it I will.’ So she cut it off and ate it with much enjoyment. When it was finished, she thought, ‘The other must follow, or the Master will notice that something is wanting.’ When the wings were consumed she went back to the window again to look for her Master, but no one was in sight. As they were all sitting at the wedding feast, the music suddenly stopped, the doors flew open, and a proud King walked in at the head of a great following. He went up to the Bridegroom, embraced him, and said, ‘I am Iron Hans, who was bewitched and changed into a Wild Man; but you have broken the spell and set me free.
