Sixteen microalgal isolates from Malaysian habitats have been screened. Of these the highest carotenoid is Ankistrodesmus convolutus, a green alga. Nitzschia conspicua, a marine diatom was discovered to produce significant amounts of the essential fatty acid eicosapentaenoic acid. The blue-green alga Synechococcus 105 was found to produce an appreciable amount of useful products including proteins, phycocyanin and carotenoids. [Authors' abstract].
