註釋
Lord Sterndale received universal acclaim during his lifetime and after his death - the authors write in their introduction how a breath of scandal or vice was never heard about him and he rose to the top seemingly without power and influence. Pickford (as he was mostly known), in the course of his career, was required to concern himself with many branches of the law and many related subjects. This book is a study of his career - the cases in which he was involved were of great interest at the time, and of course, the Inquiry into the Dardanelles was perhaps the most sombre of all the work which engaged him. The authors have sought to examine his reaction and to assess the qualities in order to find out what makes a perfect judge.
