Kingdom of Ends
註釋Sarah Sheffield, a twenty something idealistic post-grad student, starts her career in the tropics of central Africa, hoping this year abroad at the American Mission will help her make choices about life and love. This novel is set against one of the most significant post-Vietnam US-Soviet proxy battles in central Africa. It is the Cold War period of the 1980's, and there are clear signs that both the Soviet Union and the U.S. have tired of the effort. Sarah learns of connections between the military and development efforts in the field that disturb her. She is close with Kate and Drew, her colleagues at the American Mission, but is challenged by their prickly boss Mack with a mysterious past. Her life also intersects with Dave, a former colleague of Mack's in Vietnam, who leads the US effort to resolve this civil war in Bongo's neighboring country and Tran, a young Vietnamese American USAID officer, who spends most of his initial year in the field at the direction of Mack. Sarah sees little of Tran until the end of her year in Bongo. Sarah has a front row view of Mack's unwinding and isolation at the American Mission as a result of his choices and actions. Another dramatic event at the end of her year abroad helps her take stock of her life.
