Thomas R. Murray was born in Scotland around 1862. He emigrated to the United States in 1879 and was naturalized 5 years later. He and his wife Mildred (Tasker) Murray settled on a homestead in the Judith River valley, northeast of Hobson, Montana, about 1889. He gradually expanded the homestead to a cattle ranch. Collection consists of a biography (n.d.), entitled "Family history", of Thomas R. Murray, written by his son Henry T. Murray, describing daily ranch life, cattle raising, the history of Hobson, acquaintance with Charles M. Russell, etc. (MF 143).
