How Autism Killed My Brother
註釋Tom shares how insurance companies let autism kill his brother by not providing him with social skills coaching. Tom's brother desperately wanted help with his social skills and his family felt helpless to help him because insurance companies would not allow him to get social skills coaching. Tom shares how non-profits and insurance companies have little understanding of high functioning autism. Tom and his family tried everything to help their son but they were trapped by a broken system for people with developmental disabilities and a broken mental health system. Tom hopes that sharing about how autism killed his brother Sam there will be doors opened to help people on the high functioning end of the Autism Spectrum receive better services. Tom tried to work with Sam on social skills himself but having autism too he was very limited on the amount of knowledge he was able to share with Tom. Tom and his mother feel guilty that they could not save Tom from autism but know they did everything they could. Now Tom and his mother advocate for better support services for people with autism and mental illness. There is not enough known about the relationship between autism and mental illness and autism non-profit organizations do not want to address the issue because they are afraid of it and do not know how to address it. In this book Tom will give some ideas and tips on how we can improve the mental health care system and help people like Sam get access to much needed social skills coaching like he wanted. Tom shares strategies and techniques on how to improve the system to help all people effected by autism instead of just some people who have autism. This is a great educational and informative book for those wanting to know more about how to help people with autism. Tom shares how autism killed his brother and how he plans to stop autism from killing others like Sam. Here is an excerpt from the book. "I feel like a failure because I let my brother die but I know there was nothing that I could have done because we did not receive any help from doctors or insurance at all. I really believe that Anthem killed my brother by denying him the services that he needed. It is very unfortunate that an insurance company was more interested in protecting their shareholders than they are in actually helping people with the disorder that they have."
