This study is prompted by Sastra Sahitya Parishad, the People's Science Movement of the State. Three urban sites were selected as sample locations for the study. Ecodeveloped camps are organised in all these locations Quantity and ingredients of the MSW from selected households, markets, slaughterhouses, hospitals and dumping grounds of municipality were monitored. Composition of the ingredients are analysed. The results are compiled and the total quantity of solid waste of these urban areas are estimated. The waste characteristics of these sampling locations varies considerably from the developed countries. Daily quantity of garbage collected from sampling locations depicts much variations and is maximum at Trivandrum. Attempts are made to modulate an appropriate and sustainable waste disposal technique for the State. [Authors' abstract].
