Relationships are integral to life and nurses by the nature of their profession are able to assist individuals in developing relationships to help in the mutual process of becoming and healing. Individuals who suffer from chronic alcohol abuse are often marginalized and alone. Many become homeless as a result of their condition. Chronic alcoholics can significantly benefit from relationships with others and from programs that support the philosophy of harm reduction. The harm reduction philosophy supports the concept of meeting the chronic alcoholic "where they are: with regard to their personal goals and needs". This also supports Rose Marie Parse's theory of human becoming. Entering into relationship with chronic alcoholics "where they are" and being fully present in the relationship can open up the opportunity to develop community relationships. Silver Creek Corner is a residential facility in Rochester, Minnesota that houses homeless, chronic alcoholics. Advanced practice nurses were able to empower the residents of Silver Creek Corner and assist them in giving back to the community in which they live. They helped clear noxious weeds from Indian Heights Park in collaboration with the Friends of Indian Heights. One of the goals of this community interaction is that someday the Silver Creek Corner residents could be empowered to break free of their alcoholism, if even for a brief time, to reach their fullest potential and change the course of their destiny.
