Once Russia's only overseas colony, Alaska has become well known because of its natural beauty and its export of natural resources. First discovered by Russia in 1741, the country developed into a commercial monopoly governed by naval officers. It was acquired by the United States by purchase through a treaty in 1867. Alaska was granted statehood in 1959, and thus became the most northern, and western, of the United States. This volume evaluates over 700 publications covering all aspects of Alaska.
