註釋"In 1981, Jeffrey Harris produced a short series of seven large works on board, and for the first time in many years several of these works have been assembled in one display. Two of these works have, in fact, never before been shown in public, and the third is making its first gallery appearance in Dunedin. This transitional series has many of the hallmarks of the autobiographical works Harris had been painting during the late 1970s. Although the temptation may be there to read part of the artist's life story into these works, he makes it clear there is no such link, and that the figures are merely actors. Unlike the earlier works, there is distinct emptiness to the background, as if to emphasise the stage-like location of the performance. The protagonists stand against a stark backdrop enlivened only by slabs of colour that do little more than hint at the setting. This allows the viewer to focus solely on the artist's arcane symbolism and the bold compositions of the figures, a structure which reflects the combined influences of contemporaries McCahon and Trusttum, and earlier artists ranging from Raphael to Beckmann. The resulting works are impressive, intriguing, and powerful"--Otago daily times, Thursday 5th August 2010.
