註釋
Melville Herman (1819-1891) was an American novelist and poet, born in New York. He left school after the failure and the death of his father's business in 1832 and was largely autodidact. Devouring Shakespeare, he was a lot inspired by his style. He published Moby-Dick or The Whale in Britain, in 1851, and later in New York. The work is an epic sea story and nowadays it is one of the great American novels. The opening line "call me Ishmael" is one of the most famous and recognizable opening line in western literature. Typee is the first book by American writer Herman Melville, published first in London, then New York, in 1846. Considered a classic in travel and adventure literature, the narrative is based on the author's actual experiences as a captive on the island Nuku Hiva in the South Pacific Marquesas Islands in 1842, and is liberally supplemented with imaginative reconstruction and adaptation of material from other books. The title is from the name of a valley there called Tai Pi Vai. Typee was Melville's most popular work during his lifetime; it made him notorious as the "man who lived among the cannibals".
