Unemployed and down to his last dollar, Simon figures he has nothing to lose when an X suddenly appears on The Map, along with the words "You are are" and a line directing him to a deserted cafe. Walking through the cafe doors locks him into a wild and terrifying journey that shatters everything he thought he knew about the world and his place in it.

The Map sends him to perilous places and alternate timelines. Along the way, he meets Ryan Mullen, a traveler who had been stranded by her boyfriend, The Map's previous owner. Together they must decipher The Map's strange and ever-changing symbols while navigating dangerous worlds with rules and mysteries of their own.

Reaching a sanctuary of old animal gods, they make a soul-searching sacrifice to correct an ancient wrong done to nature itself. A sacrifice which could leave them stuck in limbo with no way home.
