Ultraviolet Spectra of Water from the Miramichi Watershed, New Brunswick
註釋Water samples from the Miramichi watershed were examined by ultraviolet (UV) spectophotometry. A major component of dissolved organic matter is high molecular weight Natural Organic Matter (NOM, humic acid, fulvic acid), which may account for up to 50% of the UV absorbance. Average concentration of NOM, quantitated as humic acid, is 15 mg/L. Kraft lignin is also detectable in several samples. Concentration of NOM may be higher than it was 30 years ago, but additional measurements are needed to confirm this. Preparations of NOM isolated from two samples have different UV as well as infrared (IR) spectra. Hexose-based polysaccharides were detected in a sample of foam and in a sample of sewage treatment plant effluent, whose chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) is about 50 mg /L. Concentration of nonpolar organics in the runoff from Strawberry Marsh is considerably lower than 30 years ago. Average concentration of nitrate in a small Miramichi-East stream, monitored for over 1 year, is 13.7 mg/L. Floating whitish material, found in 1998 in the estuary, is a rancid lipid. Its source could not be determined
