A survey has been made of the generation, dispersal and removal processes for the various automotive emissions and their natural counterparts in the atmosphere, and of their effects on man and his environment. In only a few categories (i.e., CO, Pb) are automotive emissions of significance relative to other anthropogenic or natural sources of pollutants in the atmosphere as a whole; however, localized effects can be overriding as a result of peculiar geographical or meteorological factors. Under certain conditions of population density, automobile usage and weather, photochemically modified automotive effluents have approached the threshold toxicity limits for susceptible individuals and plants. There are apparently no significant long-term atmospheric changes that man might produce which cannot be rapidly reversed at any time by man's curtailment of his own activities. (Author).
