With the Energy Transition becoming a growing concern for German citizens, there is increasing public interest in playing an active role in protecting the environment. Hereby, citizen financing solutions such as crowdfunding and cooperatives open up the possibility of contributing to renewable energy projects to the wider population. Whereas cooperatives have experienced a significant rise over the last years, and have established their fair share in renewable energies, crowdfunding is still in an early stage, financing only a discrete number of projects but becoming increasingly popular. Given the latest legislation developments, investments of energy cooperatives into renewable energies are currently on a downward trend. Crowdfunding has the potential to step into this gap and develop into a valuable form of citizen participation in renewable energies.
