Jiffa is a poor girl growing up in the Volta Region in the 1960s. Her poor parents give her away whilst still a child, in an arranged marriage. Neither bride nor groom have any choice. The novel explores the progress of the marriage, dwelling on the plight of Jiffa - representative of so many African women who have little control over their choice of husbands.
