ירושלים כבר לא בליטא
註釋Discusses the encounter of Jewish and Lithuanian memories in relation to the manifold dimensions of place, focusing in particular on the Holocaust period, but also relating to Jewish Lithuania throughout the centuries. Relates the fate of the Jews in Lithuania during World War II, noting that non-Jews there collaborated with the Nazis more than in any other country, partly because the Jews were associated with the hated Soviet regime. Lithuania has its own day of Holocaust commemoration, on 23 September, the date of the great deportation from the ghetto in 1943 which led to the liquidation of the ghetto. Many memorials have been set up in the country, and research is being carried out in various institutions. Local authorities often carefully preserve Jewish sites, e.g. synagogues and cemeteries, mostly to encourage Jewish tourism. Elaborates on commemoration sites in Vilna, Kovno, the town of Žiežmariai (between the two cities), and the forest of Ponar. Discusses, also, commemoration of Lithuanian Jewry in Israel and Yizkor books that have been published for various towns.
