First published in 1874, The Presuppositions of Critical History has long been regarded as an outstanding example of the analytical philosophy of history as currently practiced by Anglo-American philosophers. It was the first serious application of British Idealism to the philosophy of history; at the same time, it shows some resemblance to certain phenomenological approaches fashionable among European philosophers.
