註釋Following two brief chapters on the condition of the Jews in Tsarist Russia (18th-19th centuries), and in the USSR in the interwar period, including antisemitism, focuses on the perpetration of the Holocaust by the Nazi occupiers of the USSR and Soviet-annexed territories from the period of the German army's invasion in June 1941. Presents details on the actions of the German civil and military administrations, the German army, the Einsatzgruppen, and local authorities and civilians in various regions in carrying out the mass murders of Jews. Notes that Nazi anti-Jewish propaganda emphasized eradication of Judeo-bolshevism. Pogroms were carried out by local populations in Ukraine, Lithuania, Latvia, Bessarabia, Bukovina, and Belarus. Local authorities also collaborated in the ghettoization and deportation of the Jews. Discusses, also, murder of German Jews, Soviet Jewish POWs, Jews in mixed marriages, and children in orphanages; the confiscation and looting of Jewish property; the attitudes of various Churches toward the persecution of Jews; activities of non-Jewish rescuers and of Jewish resistance fighters and partisans; and Soviet antisemitism in the immediate postwar period. Ch. 49 (pp. 1005-1015) discusses the number of victims and survivors in various parts of the USSR.
