Material is based on a collection of paintings and drawings produced by patients between 1920 and 1959 at the Psychiatric and Neurologic University Hospital of Pecs, Hungary. Drawing on long-term observation of patients' productions in relation to the progression of their illnesses, the author discusses such topics as the productions of schizophrenics and manic depressives; characteristics of patients' drawings and paintings from an artistic point of view; the diagnostic value of the pictorial products; and characteristics of the representation of hallucinosis.
