註釋Major league baseball was established in 1876 when the National League was formed; the American League (the "Junior Circuit") was founded in 1901. Besides these two surviving leagues, five other organizations functioned as "major leagues." In all, these seven associations coordinated and regulated the activities of more than 100 professional teams. The author, noting the absence of a single comprehensive listing of these teams and leagues, here offers for each league capsule histories that include its teams and rosters of its players. Leagues are presented in chronological order of their founding, from the National Association of Professional Baseball Players (1871-75) through the Federal League (1914-15). Team histories include presidents, managers, best hitter and pitcher, and in some cases, team highlights. Other lists feature the origins and name changes of present-day major league teams.
