註釋Coming from a perspective convinced of the importance of the sector, and of volunteers, this paper will examine data on the economic value of the sector. The economic value of volunteers will also be assessed. The paper will argue, however, that volunteers and the voluntary sector, are more important than purely operating with an economic paradigm would suggest. Developing that theme, the paper will examine, in some depth, volunteering in Ireland, using the most up-to-date data available. Incorporating the current debate on social capital, the paper argues for the importance of placing the 'self' in any discussion on volunteering.
