Law and Gospel in Action
註釋These eesays and sermons were written over a sixteen-year span and are clustered around three themes: foundations, ethics, and church. The section "foundations" presents scripture, the theology of the cross and its impact on theological anthropology, and the role of reason in theology, both as it serves the explication of doctrine and as it allows itself to be critiqued when it oversteps its limits. The section "ethics" challenges those who accommodate to secular ethics current among mainline Protestants. It also challenges nostalgic attempts to re-Catholicize Protestant ethics. These essays propose that Christian ethics is a natural outflow of generosity from those graced b God's abundant forgiveness and mercy. The section "church" advances a distinctively confessional identity as opposed to the need for fitting into either American Evangelicalism or minline Protestantism, positions that ultimately sell out the gospel. But even in spite of this challenging and often hostile atmosphere, God continues to mercifully provide daily community, "conversation and consolation of the brethen," which often makes the journey not only light but even joyous.
