The re-design & development of the existing thoroughbred race track at Sandown Park in North Saanich. At present (1980) the 97 acre site is leased for harness racing in the summer months and to the Capital City Turf Club for approximately 4 weeks in October and November for thoroughbred racing. Other than expanding the racing facilities this scheme shows the viability of including other activities which would make better year round use of the site and attract a broader spectrum of the population. The intent is to develop Sandown Park at a scale somewhere between the community & the regional park. It is suggested that the Saanich agricultural fairgrounds be relocated to Sandown & combine some facilities with the horse racing; a combination which has proven successful in California & elsewhere.
