The Living World of the Old Testament
註釋This second edition has been extensively revised and brought up to date in the light of recent changes in many aspects of biblical history and interpretation. In particular, the section on the early history of Israel incorporates information which has become available since the publication of the first edition. Discussions between experts of different faiths have given rise to numerous textual alterations which have been taken into account. The index has been enlarged and divided into separate author and subject entries and the bibliography expanded. New illustrations and improved maps support the text. The work takes the form of a companion to the Bible: it does not retell the story, but provides a well-informed introduction and work of reference. The literary and theological development of the Old Testament is described within a framework of the development of Israel as a community. Nothing of the poetry or vigour of the original is smothered by dull comment; instead it is illuminated by lively appraisal.
