Provides an empirical analysis of the relationship between education and earnings in China's urban areas where one year of schooling increased total annual earnings by roughly 5 per cent in 1991. Examines the effects of education on earnings and as a function by gender, sector, and by type of earnings of individuals. Indicates that China had lower returns to education than countries such as the United States and Australia.
