註釋This research study was prompted by reports of a high prevalence of depression and anxiety amongst the Afghan refugee population in the Dandenong area of Melbourne, Victoria. The study explores the factors contributing to poor mental health and wellbeing among women of childbearing age and their families in this area, and the barriers and opportunities for improving ante?natal and post-natal support. Drawing on focus groups, it discusses issues including attitudes towards mental illness and support during pregnancy, antenatal and postnatal support in Afghanistan, use of pregnancy support in Australia, acceptable ways of dealing with stress and distress in the Afghan cultures, pre?migration trauma and family conflict, spousal relationships, isolation, awareness of services, 'husbands as gatekeepers' to service use, use of interpreters, and costs of mental health services.
