A Quartet of Classic Ghost Stories
註釋Here, for the first time together, a quartet of fantastic ghostly tales.Firstly we have All Men Are Ghosts by L. P. JACKS.... "Panhandle," I said, "you seem to be on a familiar footing with the ghosts. How did you acquire it? " "Ah, my friend," he replied, "the answer to that is a long story. Come down to my house in the country, stay a fortnight, and I promise to give you abundant material for your next book." Jacks published prolifically over a period of fifty years, his works included philosophical and visionary treatises, biographies, articles, and moral parables. You are guaranteed to love All Men Are Ghosts. Then we have the comic The Canterville Ghost which is a popular short story by Oscar Wilde that has been adapted both for screen and stage. It was the first of his stories to be published, appearing in the magazine The Court and Society Review. This is a great ghost story that can be read with enjoyment over and over.Third in this quartet is His Unquiet Ghost by Mary Noailles Murfree writing under the pen name of Charles Egbert Craddock. A prolific writer of novels and short stories this tale is incredibly well written and easy to read. You will find this a ghost story of first class quality. Last in this great anthology is the 'true' ghost story The Haunted House by Walter Hubbell. The story is based on The Great Amherst Mystery which was a notorious case of reported poltergeist activity in Amherst, Nova Scotia, Canada between 1878 and 1879. Walter Hubbell was an actor with an interest in psychic phenomena and he kept what he claimed was a diary of events in the house, which he later expanded into a popular book The Haunted House. Prepare to be chilled to the bone with this 'true' account of ghostly activity. If you love a good ghost story then be sure to add this great anthology to your collection...
