註釋
Football is big business. The annual turnover of the FA Premier League in England now exceeds 500 million and looks set to reach 1 billion early in the new millenium.Much of this growth is revenue is due to the huge increase in the value of broadcasting rights in football-the current four-year deal between the Premier League,BSkyBand the BBC is wotrth 743 million. The boom in the football business has seen clubs being floated on the stockmarket;18 English clubs are currently quoted on the London Stock Exchange and clubs elsewhere in Europe are following suit.Internationally, too, the game is thriving:the 1998 World Cup had an initial entry of over 170 countries;sponsership deals for the tournament were worth in excess of 350 million;endorsements for individual competing nations-including Nike's sponsership of the Brazilian national team-were worth upwards of 100 million. But the economics of football,as other professional team sports, are complex.Clubs mustco-operate as joint producers;you need two teams to produce a football match and many teams to create league and cup competitions.A better-Quality product (resulting in more sporting achievements)may no ensure financial success,as monopolising the market through dominating league and cup competitions can reduce the fans'interest through the loss of uncertainty of outcome.
