As in the Decameron, the lovers enclose themselves in the hills far from the plague and pass their time recounting stories. Susan is Scherezada and she tells her sultan Rodrigo a new story every night. Each story describes an episode with her multiple lovers and Rodrigo each morning postpones his decision to kill her. But each night he receives a new stab of jealousy.
