How Do People Experience and Describe Daydreaming?
註釋[Abstract] This research project grew out of the researchers long time interest in daydreaming. The question was: "How do people experience and describe daydreaming?" The research model used was qualitative in nature and a heuristic paradigm was employed in order to study the essence of the daydreaming experience. The heuristic paradigm involves learning through the self and focuses on subjective states and the wholeness of the experience. The review of literature revealed that previous research conducted about daydreaming and related phenomena utilized quantitative paradigms, yielding fragmented results which failed to capture the essence of the experience. An open-ended interview format was used in order to gather descriptive portrayals from the ten participants. In addition, the researcher gathered data from his own daydreaming experiences, which were recorded by journaling. The data collected revealed nine patterns which described the essence of the daydreaming experience, these patterns were; dealing with feelings (emotions), escape from physical pain, stress reduction, boredom, creativity, unfinished business, rehearsal, goal setting and learning from the past. In re-examining the patterns there emerged three central themes which further explicated the meaning of daydreaming, namely; creativity, processing and escape. A creative synthesis was developed which depicted the essence of the daydreaming experience. Applications and implications were discussed which included the use of daydreaming. in education and psychotherapy, and recommendations were made for further research.
