註釋There exist greater differences of opinion with regard to the content and style of the Eastern Portal of the North Transept than any other transept portal at Chartres. Its archivolts have caused controversy and some remain unidentified. Katzenellenbogen (The Sculptural Programs of Chartres Cathedral) pays little attention to many elements of the portal and hence his interpretation of the portal as «Mariological» does not hold up in light of newly discovered iconographic relationships.
