Growing Up the Hard Way
註釋During World War II, an endless white ribbon of sailors lined Norfolk's streets and back alleys from East Main to Ocean View Amusement Park. For James "Red" Kulpan, a 1948 graduate of Granby High School, those pathways were filled with adventures, challenges and ultimate championships.... "Red's a larger-than-life character. Hard to contain," chuckled the late Sonny Rowell in a 2008 interview.Red's memoir, Growing Up the Hard Way, chronicles Kulpan and Granby's journey to a state championship in basketball and three in football during and shortly after the war."I always thought I had a story to tell," said Kulpan, 82,"but in life one thing leads to another and I never found the time until now."Playing basketball at Duke, investigating UFO sightings in Tennessee, teaching parachuting and survival in the Far East, and reorganizing bankrupt hospitals in Florida and Tennessee forced his literary career to the back burner.Kulpan finally penned the book while battling Parkinson's Disease, a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system."Yes, the stories are true," admitted Kulpan with a smile. "I've always had a playful side. Hopefully, the statute of limitations has run out on most of that stuff."It's a story of growing up in Ocean View, overcoming odds and forging friendships that have lasted for over six decades.Gary Ruegsegger -THE VIRGINIAN-PILOT
