註釋Despite the amply documented presence of significant numbers of undeclared homosexual soldiers, sailors, and Air Force personnel, the official position of the American military since the Second World War has been to ban gay men and lesbian women from serving in the United States military. Enlistment of openly gay or lesbian military personnel has not been permitted; those already in the military service who have subsequently "come out" as gays and lesbians have been mustered out of the service, with no prospect of appeal.
