Single crystals of the intermetallic phase SmAl were formed on an Al2O3 surface during an attempt to produce single crystals of samarium metal. This note describes the production of the SmAl crystals, the use of X-ray fluorescence and electron probe techniques to determine the chemical composition of the crystals, and the X-ray diffraction data obtained.
