Investigation Into Some of the Physico Chemical Aspects of the Production of Uranium Dioxide
註釋A thermo balance incorporating a DTA apparatus has been built and utilised in studying the decomposition of ammonium diuranate (ADU). The ADU was found to decompose slowly to UO3 at about 358 degrees C. and then to U3O8 above this temperature. From the x-ray investigation this ADU was shown to have a hexagonal unit cell. The composition of the ADU corresponded with the formula 2UO31.13NH3.3H2O. The reduction of urano-uranic oxide by hydrogen was then studied in the apparatus. An activation energy of 18.6 +/- 2.6 k cal/mole based on U3O8 and a reaction order of about 1 was found. The reduction mechanism proved to be quite complex. A 4 step reduction mechanism is proposed. U3O8 --> UO2.600 --> UO2.25 -->UO2+x --> UO2.00.
