註釋This report presented the findings of surveys of vulnerable and intimidated witnesses (VIWs) which looked at experiences and satisfaction before and after the implementation of defined special measures under the Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Act 1999. VIWs, attending all Crown Courts and magistrates' courts where a Witness Service was operating, were approached to take part in the research. Vulnerable and intimidated witnesses were found to be less satisfied with their overall experience of the criminal justice system than witnesses more generally, although there was a statistically significant increase in satisfaction ratings between the pre- and post-implementation surveys. Satisfaction was higher with individual criminal justice agencies than with the criminal justice system, overall, and particularly high for Witness Service, court staff and judges/magistrates. The survey findings suggest that special measures are helping to improve witness experience and satisfaction with the criminal justice system.
