註釋
This letter deals with the now defunct, predominantly African American, town of Buxton, Iowa. In the years after its abandonment, historical researchers sought out any living members of the town of Buxton in an effort to preserve its history. It could be surmised that this letter is a response to a request for information on Buxton. In this letter, Brown tells Swisher that he did not ever live in Buxton, but that he married his wife Susan there in 1902. He then summarizes his knowledge of the town and two of its important players including: Dr. E.A. Carter who became the first African American physician to graduate from the University of Iowa and practiced medicine in Buxton, and the attorney George Woodson who became a Republican nominee for the State Legislature. Brown also mentions some prominent African American educators who worked in Buxton.
