The king provoked and underscored European claims less with disinterest or prudency and more with conscious ignorance of European traditions. The biography and ubiquity of the monarchs, culture, the Enlightenment and Frederician toleration, with militarism, courtly ceremony and political thought have shaped interest in Frederick as much as justice, economics and finance, the historical and the countless current uses as well as the depictions of Frederick as an enemy and a stereotype.

German description: Das von 48 Wissenschaftlern aus sieben Staaten gestaltete Werk steht unter der Leitfrage, wie Friedrich der Grosse auf Europa wirkte und welchen Einfluessen Preussen im 18. Jahrhundert ausgesetzt war. Weniger mit Desinteresse oder Bescheidenheit, sondern vielfach mit bewusstem Ignorieren europ�ischer Traditionen provozierte der K�nig und unterstrich seinen europ�ischen Anspruch.
