The introduction provides background on the 1998 version, the objectives & scope of the Study, child welfare services in Canada, and the definitional framework of CIS-2003. Chapter 2 describes data collection & processing methods. The remaining chapters present & discuss the 2003 data in the following categories: incidence of reported abuse & neglect, including physical abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, emotional maltreatment, and exposure to domestic violence; characteristics of maltreatment, including physical & emotional harm and the duration of maltreatment; service dispositions, such as investigations, referrals, justice system involvement, and out-of-home placement; child & household characteristics; and referral & agency characteristics.
