註釋
In this study, we explore the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on road accidents, road injuries, and road fatalities in Mexico. We use national administrative road safety records that include road accidents in urban and suburban areas of Mexico over 2017 to 2020. Employing a state-level monthly series, our methodology consists of an event-study design and a difference-in-differences specification. Our results point to a reduction in the rates of road accidents, road injuries, and road fatalities during the pandemic. These results hold overall and across several road user groups. However, the decline in accidents and fatalities are not proportional, and the evidence points to an increase in the proportion of fatal road accidents to total road accidents. Put together, these findings indicate that the severity of road accidents rose after the beginning of the pandemic.
