A Decade of Research on the Environmental Impacts of Pulp and Paper Mill Effluents in Canada (1992-2002)
註釋In 1992, a new regulatory package for the Canadian pulp & paper industry was introduced which set new levels for permitted concentrations of pollutants in effluents. To fill gaps in knowledge about the effects of those pollutants, the Minister of the Environment launched an intensive government-industry-university research program. This report contains a detailed review of the research conducted from 1992 to 2002 following implementation of the regulatory package. The first section summarizes Canadian research leading up to the 1992 package as well as the subsequent field studies & mechanistic research. The section discusses the evolution of the research questions as the research program progressed, the research presented at international conferences on the environmental fate & effects of pulp & paper mill effluents, and the research conducted in response to feedback from the Environmental Effects Monitoring program that every mill was required to conduct under the Pulp & Paper Effluent Regulations. The second section covers the development & application of bioassays for pulp mill effluents, including short-term acute bioassays, assessment of enzyme induction & steroid depression, and the use of mesocosms & life cycle studies. The final section reviews research into the characterization of bioactive chemicals in mill effluents.
