Survey and Analysis of Mercury and Iron Concentrations Within the Sediments of Three East Texas River Segments
註釋A study of the total mercury and iron concentrations within the sediments of three East Texas river segments was conducted in the three major rivers surrounding B.A. Steinhagen Reservoir (Dam B) during the spring of 2006. The Neches River flowing into Dam B is largely uninterrupted for 106 km and is visibly more turbid than either the Angelina River or the Neches River below Dam B. East of the Neches River is the Angelina River which flows from the spillway of Sam Rayburn Reservoir less than 40 kilometers upstream and is subject to regular periods of high flow due to the frequent releases from the reservoir's spillway. Below the dam of B.A. Steinhagen Reservoir, is the continuation of the Neches River below Dam B which flows southward to the Gulf of Mexico. Samples were collected from each bank of the selected rivers at 1.6 kilometer intervals for a total distance of 16 kilometers and analyzed using a CETAC mercury analyzer for mercury concentrations, Perkin Elmer flame atomic absorption for iron concentrations and the Bouyoucos method using mechanical separation for sediment texture. Concentrations of the sediments were found to have a low correlation with distance from the reservoir body as well as with the sediment texture.
