Policy Directions for Emerging Industries in Korea
註釋For over a decade, emerging industries(afterwards, EIs) have been targeted by Korean government. These EIs are based on new technologies including BT(Biotechnology), IT(Information Technology), NT(Nanotechnology), CS(Cognitive Science), GT(Green Technology), and their converging technologies.1) The industries using these technologies show rapid technology-driven market growth. In Korea, for instance, the average growth rate of the BT industry was 14.3% over 3 years from 2006 to 2008, as shown in Table 1.The establishment of an EI development strategy is very important in that these industries canprovide spin-off effects in the areas of technology development as well as market creation. In Korea, the patents for IT, BT, an NT have increased rapidly, which means that the utilizations of these technologies can expand into other manufacturing industries. The spin-off effects can be spread broadly through this technology convergence. Compared with IT, as shown in Table 2, BT and NT have recorded higher increase rates.
