They are some of the studies conducted by students, colleagues, and the author over the past 35 years. More than half of the papers have never been published, although most of them were presented at scientific meetings. The previously published papers have appeared in widely scattered places, often as chapters in books. This volume makes available for the first time a fairly complete presentation of a coherent body of work.
